First Steps
(important before the OU)
To be all set for the OU's CSI (Computer Service Introduction), you should activate your STiNE/UHH account beforehand.
You can do this via the user account
management portal (German: "Benutzerverwaltung"), which you can access at
account.uni-hamburg.de. You can switch to "English" in the top right corner.
You should be able to log in using the STiNE username (e.g., BAM1234) and initial password you most likely received in an e-mail sent to your private e-mail account by campus-center@uni-hamburg.de (or possibly still via post if you were living in Germany at the time of your application).
First, please change your initial password to something else (only make sure you still remember this new password later during the OU's CSI ;) ).
You may also enter a (German) mobile number in case you ever forget your password and don't want to go to the RRZ ("Regionales Rechenzentrum") located at the main campus to have it reset.
If you have not yet received the documents containing your STiNE data, you can unfortunately not execute most of the following steps for now since you will require that data to do so.
You might sometimes have to wait up to 30 minutes before your account is fully activated.
To check whether the activation of your STiNE/UHH account was successful and to ensure you can log in using your new password, you can, e.g., try logging in to STiNE at www.stine.uni-hamburg.de
Two-factor authentication (2FA)
Most university services now incorporate two-factor authentication into the login process. It is, therefore, practical to activate at least one device for this authentication, so you do not have to carry around the printed list of 2FA codes. Instructions on how to set up 2FA on various devices and operating systems can be found on the RRZ's 2FA-page.
Surfmail
Next, we will look at your university e-mail account.
You can only log in to your e-mail account after activating your STiNE account.
To log in to surfmail, enter your STiNE username and the newly set password at surfmail.rrz.uni-hamburg.de.
In case this does not work after multiple attempts, you should better ask the RRZ-Serviceline for help, as your account will get blocked after a certain number of failed login attempts!
If your login was successful, you can continue by filling out your permission sheet.
Filling out the permission sheet
Around the beginning of October, your Informatics account data will be sent to your university e-mail account.
Look for this e-mail a few days before the OU starts. It should have a subject like
Your new Informatics user name 5surname, (possibly in German Ihre neue Informatik-Benutzerkennung 5surname).
Open that e-mail and read it thoroughly. You can usually derive your Informatics username from the subject. The e-mail will have a PDF file attached, encrypted with your 7-digit student number. Please open the file, enter your home address and phone number, and sign it. Do not forget to check the checkbox regarding the European data protection law (DSGVO)!
Later (during the OU or in the section Informatics account), we will show you what to do with your Informatics account. However, to be allowed to use the computers at the Informatikum, you have to either hand in the filled out and printed permission sheet at the OU or send it back via e-mail after completing the full Computer Service Introduction.
- If you attend the OU in person: please have the information from the sheet available in some form during the CSI. You can then either hand in the filled out sheet in printed form during the CSI, or via e-mail back to the sender afterward.
- If you do not attend the OU in person: You will need the password from the sheet later in the Informatics Account section and will have to send the filled out sheet back to the sender after you changed this password.
If all the previous steps worked out, you can proceed through this guide.
In case you will be present at the OU, you can skim through the following pages, but we will also execute the important steps together during the OU's CSI.
