Surfmail

(If you will attend your OU in presence you can scan this page, but we will go through these steps in detail together during the OU. You also can just skip to the next "important" chapter Zoom.

Like already mentioned in Account Overview, you will receive an E-Mail account when starting your studies at the Department of Informatics:

  • University mail address
    • Uses your STiNE account credentials
    • Looks like this:
      firstname.lastname@studium.uni-hamburg.de
    • Has an alias which you should never use that contains your STiNE account name:
      bam1234@studium.uni-hamburg.de

After you have activated your STiNE account, you should be able to login at surfmail.rrz.uni-hamburg.de with your STiNE credentials. Should this not work after multiple attempts, better ask for help at the Q&A session, because after a few failed attempts your account will get banned!

Create identity

While logged in, click the gear (⚙, next to "Tasks") → "Preferences" → "Global Preferences" → "Personal Information". Create an identity with an arbitrary name and enter your full name and your long mail adress (firstname.lastname@studium.uni-hamburg.de). Make sure that this identity is the default identity.

You'll need to verify your new identity through a link that will be sent to you to your Inbox. Leave Surfmail open, you'll need it for the following sections.

E-Mail forwarding and clients

As already mentioned in the previous page, you should make sure that you receive your STiNE messages via E-Mail and likewise that you get notified when you receive any message to your University E-Mail account. We strongly advise you not to forward your University E-Mails to your private E-Mail account for data protection reasons! Other than stated here in an earlier version it is not explicitly forbidden.

We strongly advise you to install and use an E-Mail client on your most-used devices like your computer or your smartphone.

Below are our recommendations for E-Mail clients:

  • For computers:
  • For Smartphones:
    • Proton Mail (Android / iOS)
    • Aqua Mail (Android)
    • K-9 Mail (Android)
