Student Web Services (mafiasi.de)

The student body at the Department of Informatics offers you a selection of web services that you can use free of charge and that you can find at mafiasi.de. MafiA stands for "Menge aller Fachschaftsinteressierten Aktivisten" which is German for "Group of all activists that are interested in the student body".

These services are maintained by volunteers whom we know personally and trust.

It's not necessary to have your iRZ account activated to set up an account in mafiasi, you only need to be able to access Surfmail!

Registration

Creating an account is straight-forward: Go to mafiasi.de, select "Englisch" at the bottom, and click "Register" at the top right.

You can register by entering your Informatics account name 5surname in the text field and clicking "Register".

You can now go to your university e-mail's inbox (introduced in Surfmail), where a new e-mail with your account activation link should arrive shortly afterward. Click the link and confirm your registration. You can now log in with your new username and password. Your mafiasi username will closely resemble your Informatics account name, with the addition of one extra digit of your starting year, i.e., 25surname.

Services

A list of all services can be found in the Dashboard at mafiasi.de. The following services might be used throughout the OU (in no particular order):

  • Groups
    • When logged in, click the blue "Groups" button at the top right to see the groups you're in (probably none so far), create new groups, invite people to groups, or accept group invitations. Groups come with a mailing list and can be used in many services. For example, you can share cloud folders with everybody in a group.
  • Cloud (cloud.mafiasi.de)
    • A cloud storage system similar to Dropbox where you can store and share your files.
  • Matrix (mafiasi.de/jabber)
    • An instant messenger
  • BitPoll (bitpoll.mafiasi.de)
    • A site to easily schedule appointments with others, similar to Doodle.
  • Wiki (wiki.mafiasi.de)
    • We maintain a Wiki (in German) that collects useful articles about studying, technology, and student culture at the Informatikum.
    • You can quickly visit Wiki articles, e.g., "pizza" by entering the URL mafiasi.de/pizza

The following services will probably not be used during the OU but might come in handy for your studies at UHH:

  • GProt (German for "Gedächtnisprotokoll" – memory protocol): A collection of memory minutes; reconstructions of exams that your fellow students uploaded for everybody.
  • Modulkompass: A collection of experience reports for the different modules, which previous students have written.
  • Etherpad: A collaborative online text editor: You write something, share the link, and everybody with access to the pad can see you type in real-time.
  • Repositories: A server for the version control system Git similar to GitHub.
  • Mafiasi Tauschen (German for "Swap"): A service to swap exercise groups with your fellow students.
  • Calendar: An online calendar you may use to manage and share your calendars and contacts.
